SHORELINE CLEAN-UP AT FIU BISCAYNE BAY CAMPUS

On Saturday, November 1, nearly 50 Girl Scouts volunteers from Miami Dade and Broward County hit the shore behind the Hospitality Management building at the Florida International University North Miami Campus for a Shoreline Clean-Up sponsored by the Sea Delight Ocean Fund and Blue Bell Ice Cream, and hosted by FIU’s School of Environment, Arts and Society.

“The purpose of the shoreline clean up is to support and engage the Girl Scouts’ goals in creating environmental and ocean conservation awareness for each participating troop and to foster a sense of personal responsibility that helps reinforce in a direct way the environmental ethic that is at the heart of the goals of the Sea Delight Ocean Fund” said Adriana Sanchez-Lindsay, President of the Sea Delight Ocean Fund. Participants were provided data sheets to record what type of items were found during the clean-up. These sheets will then be provided to The Nature Conservancy for their records.

Nicholas Ogle, Environmental Coordinator at FIU’s School of Environment, Arts and Society, provided an innovative presentation on marine conservation following the shoreline clean-up. He also showed participants how to plant Mangrove seedlings as part of their Mangrove Restoration Program. We hope to be able to join him again once these seedlings are ready to be planted.
